Landrace sows will cope outdoors

A question came in from a producer:
Can you put pure Landrace sows and gilts outdoors? Will they cope?

  1. Yes! Putting pure Landrace sows and gilts outdoors should not be a problem as the pigs' natural instincts will kick in and they will adapt to the outdoor situation. To help them settle in make sure you start off some wallows before they arrive; fill with water to create an emulsion and the pigs will soon find them and wallow.
If you are mixing the Landrace pigs with cross breds make sure that they have enough lying space in the huts, or ideally provide at least two huts so they have a choice, as Landrace pigs can be more submissive as a line and require special attention.
